Background of the study
Corporate sustainability communications refer to the strategies companies use to convey their commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices. In Abuja, an oil and gas company has begun to adopt sustainability communications as part of its efforts to rebuild its image in an industry often associated with environmental degradation (Udo, 2023). Through transparent reporting, community engagement, and environmental initiatives, the company aims to reshape consumer attitudes and regain public trust. Sustainability communications play a pivotal role in influencing how consumers perceive a company’s commitment to ethical practices and environmental stewardship (Okoro, 2024). Given the inherent challenges in the oil and gas sector, where skepticism often runs high, effective sustainability messaging can be a critical differentiator. This study examines how the company’s sustainability communications affect consumer attitudes, focusing on message clarity, credibility, and overall impact on consumer perceptions (Nnamdi, 2025). The findings will provide insights into the effectiveness of corporate sustainability communications in altering negative perceptions and fostering a more positive corporate image.

Statement of the problem
Despite efforts to enhance sustainability communications, the oil and gas company in Abuja continues to face challenges in altering consumer attitudes. The legacy of environmental issues and public distrust in the industry complicates the effectiveness of sustainability messages (Udo, 2023). Consumers may perceive these communications as disingenuous or as mere public relations efforts, which undermines the intended impact on consumer attitudes (Okoro, 2024). Furthermore, the lack of standardized metrics to evaluate the success of sustainability communications adds to the challenge. This study aims to address these issues by examining the link between corporate sustainability communications and consumer attitudes, offering actionable insights for improving message credibility and overall effectiveness (Nnamdi, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

To assess the impact of corporate sustainability communications on consumer attitudes.

To identify factors that enhance the credibility of sustainability messages.

To recommend strategies for improving sustainability communications in the oil and gas sector.

Research questions:

How do corporate sustainability communications influence consumer attitudes in the oil and gas industry?

What factors contribute to the credibility of sustainability messages?

How can oil and gas companies improve their sustainability communications?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates how effective sustainability communications can reshape consumer attitudes in an industry with historical challenges. The findings will offer valuable insights for oil and gas companies seeking to improve public trust and brand reputation through transparent and credible messaging. The research contributes to academic literature on corporate communications and provides practical recommendations for optimizing sustainability strategies, ultimately fostering better consumer relations (Okoro, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to examining corporate sustainability communications and their impact on consumer attitudes for an oil and gas company in Abuja. The results are specific to this context and may not be generalizable to other sectors.

Definitions of terms:

Corporate Sustainability Communications: The messaging and reporting practices that convey a company's commitment to sustainable and ethical practices.

Consumer Attitudes: The perceptions and feelings of consumers towards a company or brand.

Oil and Gas Company: An enterprise involved in the exploration, extraction, refining, and marketing of petroleum products.
